Coventry is a city well-established in the creative and digital sectors, with a long and respected R&D history. The Serious Games Institute at Coventry University was established in 2007 at a time of great change in the gaming industry, and led the charge in implementing modern gaming technologies like augmented reality and immersive simulations.

The city is also just 9 miles from the cluster of gaming developers in Leamington known as ‘Silicon Spa’. There are more than 40 studios employing over 1,200 people directly - and they make up a huge 10% of the UK games industry. There you’ll find names like Playground Games, SEGA Hardlight, Codemasters, Exient, and Ubisoft Leamington, making it a hub for IT jobs in the Midlands.

Away from gaming, Coventry also has strong links to advanced manufacturing, much like the rest of the Midlands; the automotive, rail, aerospace and motorsport industries employ in excess of 40,000 in the city. The aerospace industry in particular is booming, so much so that The Coventry and Warwickshire Aerospace Forum was formed to represent local manufacturers.

Why look for IT jobs in Coventry?

Although it’s well-known for gaming and automotive tech, there are plenty of varied IT jobs in Coventry. There’s a great mix of established and just-moved large businesses making homes in the city, including moneycorp, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering and design centre, and the National Grid.

Away from work, Coventry is a city bursting with life. It was designated as the UK City of Culture for 2021, showcasing its commitment to the arts and creative industries. It brought a huge £172.6 million investment to the city, and the economic boost from the year’s tourism and events schedule is still making a positive impact. Even better, rent prices in Coventry are 65% lower than in London, so you’ll notice a significant difference if you’re leaving the capital.

Why hire in Coventry?

Coventry has consistently invested in a robust digital infrastructure to support its growing IT, digital and tech industries. High-speed internet, technology parks like the University of Warwick’s Science Park, and co-working spaces with modern amenities are available throughout the city, creating a great working environment for businesses in the sector.

In the heart of the West Midlands, Coventry’s rail, road, and air links allow easy national and global travel, making it ideal for commuting. Plus, it was announced in 2023 that Coventry would pioneer a Very Light Rail tech system (VLR) with £72M worth of investment, the first city in the UK to have this innovative battery-powered rail system. It was partially selected for its work in transport tech:

“Coventry has helped pioneer VLR and will therefore – alongside our wider region – be well placed to take advantage of this growing industry and the new job opportunities it will bring in the months and years ahead.”
