Connected Healthcare Hiring: The Skills NHS Trusts and MedTech Vendors Are Competing For
Mention the NHS digital agenda and most
people picture patchy apps and ageing systems. Underneath that, a different
story is playing out: a genuine hiring race for the people who can actually
build, secure and run connected healthcare. If you're in this space, the demand
is real, and it's not slowing down.
The digital workforce gap is the real bottleneck, not the budget
Recent commentary from NHS technology
leaders has been blunt: large-scale digital programmes — electronic patient
record rollouts, shared care records, secure data environments — are
constrained less by funding than by capacity. Short-term outsourcing can plug
gaps for a specific project, but the consensus among those running these
programmes is that a resilient digital NHS needs a permanent, in-house digital
workforce, not a rotating cast of contractors.
MedTech is hiring for the decade ahead, not just this year
This isn't a short-term spike. The
Association of British HealthTech Industries has estimated the sector will need
around 70,000 additional jobs by 2035 to keep pace with demand, on top of
roughly 75,000 replacement hires as the existing workforce retires or moves on.
That's a structural shortage, and it's why MedTech employers are increasingly
willing to build talent pipelines rather than wait for ready-made candidates to
apply.
The PSTN switch-off is about to create a SIP engineering crunch
Much of the "connected" in
connected healthcare depends on unglamorous telecoms infrastructure that's
about to disappear. The UK's analogue phone network is scheduled for full
switch-off on 31 January 2027, and it doesn't just carry phone calls — it
underpins burglar and fire alarm diallers, lift emergency phones, door entry
and access control systems, and, critically, the telecare pendant alarms and
fall-detection units relied on by hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people.
Every one of those has to be re-engineered onto SIP, IP, or 4G/5G dual-path
signalling, tested and certified before the deadline.
The scale of that migration is already
visible: over 4,000 telecoms engineers are currently working with around 40
telecare providers just to move existing users across safely, one household at
a time, and availability is expected to tighten sharply as the cutover
approaches. For hiring managers, that puts SIP engineering, VoIP migration and
telecoms infrastructure skills squarely inside the connected healthcare
conversation, not off to one side of it — anyone specifying or supporting alarm
receiving centres, pendant alarm platforms or access control systems needs
people who understand both the legacy analogue estate and its IP replacement.
The West Midlands is quietly becoming a genuine MedTech hub
This is the part we're glad to see, because
it's on our doorstep. The West Midlands is now home to over 700 MedTech
businesses, anchored by hubs including the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus
and Arden Cross, backed by new qualifications launched specifically to address
the sector's skills shortage — alongside a wider shift nationally, with Leeds
and Manchester now genuinely competitive with the traditional London and M4
corridor clusters for digital health and health-data roles.
